Using Classroom Data
Using Data for Instructional Decision Making:
Holistic Data (Alternate Ranking)

In this section the group practices using a simple strategy, Alternate Ranking. Dr. Fox considers this strategy to be one of the easiest and most useful ways for principals and teachers to begin using data.

A diagnostic tool appropriate for all grade levels and across all subject areas, Alternate Ranking is designed to help teachers think very clearly and specifically about their students. What it is they know? What it is they don't know? What it is they are and aren't able to do? What is the nature of support needed by each student? How might they be grouped, temporarily, to enhance or speed up their learning?

Roster This tool helps teachers keep up on top of what students know and are able to do, and to think through adjusting instruction to help them... -- The power is in the tools simplicity, but the discussion that comes from its use is marvelous, absolutely marvelous. -- Dennis Fox
